Bowen Technique Treatment

What Should I Expect?

Before a Treatment:

Please inform us if you have any limitation in mobility so that we can make arrangements to ensure that your treatment is comfortable. We have equipment to allow us to treat people in a seated position if they are unable to lie on a flat treatment table, and a special facility for pregnant ladies to allow them to lie face down comfortably, with their bump supported.
Please ensure that you have a drink of water prior to your treatment. This will help to keep you hydrated, and can make a significant contribution to the outcome of your treatment.

During a Treatment:

The Bowen Technique moves are normally applied to bare skin, but may be applied over light clothing without any loss of effectiveness. Thick or heavy clothing, such as denim, is difficult to work through, and should not be worn to a treatment. The decision to disrobe for treatment is entirely up to the client. In either case you will be covered with some towels throughout your treatment, your therapist will move the towels to expose the areas he is working on while he makes the moves, and will then cover you up again.
The therapist will talk to you about the main presenting condition, and any other significant details. He may ask about your medical history and any medication you are taking. He will take notes throughout the consultation. These notes remain confidential, but transcripts may be made available on request to your doctor or solicitor, subject to suitable consent and authorisation. The therapist may assess your posture or the range of movement in some of your joints as part of the consultation.
The therapist will discuss any moves to be made in sensitive areas before the treatment, to ensure that you are comfortable with having work done in these areas. If you are not comfortable with any aspect of the proposed treatment, please let the therapist know, so that he can alter the treatment to accommodate this.
You are welcome to have a chaperone or companion present during the treatment if this makes you feel more comfortable. Minors must be accompanied by a parent or guardian at all times during a treatment, without exception.
Most people find a Bowen Technique treatment to be a relaxing and enjoyable experience. Many people will feel like falling asleep. Please feel free to do so, as the therapist will tell you if he needs you to move. Other possible reactions during the treatment include a rumbling stomach, a sensation of heat in the areas being worked on or tingling in the arms or legs. Some people feel none of these things.
A feature of a Bowen Technique treatment is that the therapist will leave the treatment room from time to time. This is to give your body a chance to begin to respond to the treatment. If you are uncomfortable being left alone in the treatment room, please let the therapist know, and while he will still have breaks in the treatment, he will remain in the room.
A first Bowen Technique consultation and treatment will normally take around an hour. Subsequent treatments should take around 45 minutes to an hour.

After a Treatment:

Immediately after the treatment, you may feel a little disoriented. If you are dizzy please do not try to stand until this passes. You may feel tired, or thirsty.
It is possible that you may feel no different when you get off the treatment table, than you did when you arrived, but many people feel some change in their presenting condition at the end of a treatment. Further changes will happen in response to the treatment for up to a week afterwards.
Your therapist will advise you to drink plenty of fluids. This will ensure that the body is adequately hydrated to assist it to change in response to the treatment, and will also help to flush out any toxins released from tight muscles. Additionally you will be advised to make sure that you move around a lot in the days after the treatment. Both the fluid intake and the movement are very important in ensuring a positive outcome from treatment. While you are encouraged to move after treatment, strenuous high impact or resistance training should be avoided, or at least reduced in intensity during the sequence of treatments. Walking is the best form of exercise after a Bowen Technique treatment.
Occasionally you may feel worse for a day or two after a Bowen Technique treatment. This a positive response and should calm down in a day or so.
Most people will find that they sleep very well after a Bowen Technique treatment.

Baby Colic Treatment

There is a very specific response after a treatment for colic in babies. Usually they will throw up, or produce a very offensive dirty nappy within a day of the treatment. Either of these is a sign of a positive response to the treatment.

How Many Treatments Will I Need?

The number of treatments required will vary according to the presenting condition and how the individual responds to treatment. Normally clients are recommended to try three treatments, spaced a week apart. Some people will need fewer treatments, some will need more, but three treatments is usually enough to gauge if the client's response indicates that a positive outcome will be achieved.
A regular top-up treatment helps to maintain health.
